Palm Beach State College commissioned Stephen Boruff, AIA Architects + Planners, Inc. to provide full architectural services for a 147,000 square foot, $33 million, Public Safety Training Center on the Lake Worth Campus. The project integrates Fire Science, Criminal Justice, EMT and Paramedic Academies into one comprehensive complex.
The Student Wellness Center, part of the Phase II and III of the Master Plan, includes tactical defense training spaces for the College’s Criminal Justice Institute, which prepares young men and women for the multiple situations they will encounter once they have graduated and are in the service of protecting the community. In this role there is always the potential of being in harm’s way and accordingly the college provides a state of the art defense tactics training program to ensure that each cadet will be able to protect themselves and perform in their role as a law enforcement officer. The New Tactical Gymnasium provides a safe environment for the practice of defending oneself in dangerous situations. It is a “classroom” designed with the latest audio-visual equipment to supplement the physical training essential for the execution of an officer’s responsibility. With padded walls and floor, immediate access to toilet and shower facilities and part of the academic campus the Defense Tactics Training Gymnasium provides the hands on experiences that one wishes never to have to use but will be grateful when a dangerous situation arises.
